He&#8217;s the vet who can actually talk to animals. But how many people know about the man who created this timeless character? Hugh Lofting was born on January 14, 1886 in Maidenhead, England.<\/p>\n<p>He was a very talented man who was trained as a civil engineer and who worked around the world in places like the West Indies, Africa, and Canada before beginning to write and illustrate the book that would begin the series that made him so famous, <i>The Story of Dr. Doolittle<\/i>. This story was based on letters that he wrote home to his children when he was on the front lines during WWI. The story was such a success that he wrote eleven more books, including the Newbery Medal-winning <i>The Voyages of Dr. Doolittle<\/i>.
