Born on March 21, 1905, in Ontario, Oregon, her family moved to Utah and Colorado before she received her diploma from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and began teaching school.<\/p>\n<p>A job teaching junior high took her to New York, where she soon began earning a reputation as a writer and poet. This former teacher, copywriter, and poetry editor for <i>Town and Country<\/i> magazine also has children&#8217;s books to her credit, including <i>The Horse that Lived Upstairs<\/i> (1944) and <i>How Mrs. Santa Claus Saved Christmas<\/i> (1963). Her picture book <i>The Most Wonderful Doll in the World<\/i>, illustrated by\u00a0Helen\u00a0Stone, was a Caldecott Honor book in 1951.
