“There once was a Velveteen Rabbit and in the beginning he was really splendid.” Author of the classic story of how a boy’s love transforms a velveteen rabbit into a real one, Margery Williams Bianco was born on June 22nd, 1881. Mostly home schooled, she came to the United States when she was nine years old.

Her first adult novel was published when she was 21, but The Velveteen Rabbit was the first and best-known of her 30 children’s books. The beloved tale has been reissued many times. 

Williams died in 1944.
