I Would Like to Thank…

The annuĀal meetĀing of the AmerĀiĀcan Library AssoĀciĀaĀtion begins this week. The winĀners of the varĀiĀous book awards are no doubt eyeĀing the fesĀtivĀiĀties with some trepĀiĀdaĀtion because they will be preĀsentĀing speechĀes. This has been going on since the first NewĀbery Award was preĀsentĀed in 1922. TraĀdiĀtionĀalĀly called ā€œAccepĀtance Papers,ā€ the speechĀes are the bulĀl’s-eye of events that have over the years morĀphed from nice litĀtle white-glove lunĀcheons into galas.

The BookolĀoĀgist has been porĀing over the papers from the first 50+ years of the NewĀbery and CaldeĀcott awards* and thought, in celĀeĀbraĀtion of the speechiĀfyĀing that will soon be going on in San FranĀcisĀco, to share some snipĀpets from speechĀes past. Enjoy.
